There are four stages of lymphoma, with stages I and II being limited (involving a limited area) and stages III and IV being advanced (more widespread). The stage is determined by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The number and location of lymph nodes affected;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whether the affected lymph nodes are above, below or on both sides of the diaphragm (the large, dome-shaped muscle under the ribcage that separates the chest [and\/or neck] from the abdomen);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whether the disease has spread to the bone marrow or to other organs such as the liver.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The most common method for staging lymphoma is called the <em><strong>Ann Arbor Staging System<\/strong>, which can be summarized as follows:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"8%\"><strong>Stage<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\"><strong>What It Means<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">I<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">The lymphoma is in only one group of lymph nodes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">II<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Two or more groups of lymph nodes are affected but they are all either above or below the diaphragm, either all in the chest or all in the abdomen.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">III<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Two or more groups of lymph nodes are affected in both the chest and the abdomen.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">IV<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">Lymphoma is in at least one organ (e.g., bone marrow, liver or lungs) as well as the<br \/>\nlymph nodes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lymphoma.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/staging_lymphoma.jpg\" alt=\"Photo description of lymphoma stages\" width=\"600\" height=\"744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lymphoma.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/staging_lymphoma.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.lymphoma.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/staging_lymphoma-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your doctor may also add a single letter to the stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>\u00a0generally means the patient has not experienced any troublesome symptoms.<br \/>\n<strong>B\u00a0<\/strong>means the patient has experienced B symptoms (fever, night sweats, weight loss)<br \/>\n<strong>X<\/strong>\u00a0means patients have bulky disease (meaning large tumours greater than 10 cm in size)<br \/>\n<strong>E<\/strong>\u00a0means patients have extranodal disease (disease outside of the lymph nodes)<\/p>\n<p>Patients with a B designation have one or more of the following B symptoms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unexplained weight loss of more than 10% in the six months before diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained fever with temperatures above 38\u00b0C (100.4\u00b0F)<\/li>\n<li>Drenching night sweats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The presence of B symptoms may be associated with more advanced-stage disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staging Lymphoma The stage of a cancer provides information on whether the cancer has spread and the extent to which it has spread within the body.
