Dr. Robert Buckman

“Coping and Hoping: How to Do Both”, Key Note Speaker

Dr. Buckman lives in Toronto, Canada, where he is a medical oncologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital, a full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and an Adjunct Professor at the M.D.Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas. For the last twenty years he has also had a second career in communication and broadcasting, presenting television science-and-medicine programmes in Britain and Canada. His series Magic or Medicine? won him a Gemini award. He has co-produced a series of fifty videos providing the basic facts on a variety of common medical conditions. He has written fourteen books including How To Break Bad News (a textbook for physicians), and What You Really Need To Know About Cancer (a comprehensive guide for patients and their families). His latest book is Cancer is a Word, Not a Sentence (a plain-language guide to cancer treatment and other major issues for newly diagnosed patients). Dr. Isabelle Bence-Bruckler

“Welcome and Introductions”, “Closing Remarks”

Dr. Bence-Bruckler is a Hematologist, a member of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, and Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology, The Ottawa Hospital. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board for Lymphoma Foundation Canada and has been the prime coordinator of annual public education forums on lymphoma in Ottawa for four years.

 

Dr. Lothar Huebsch

“The Future of Transplantation for Lymphoma and Myeloma”

Dr. Huebsch is a Hematologist, a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at The Ottawa Hospital. He will discuss the evolving role of transplantation in lymphoma and myeloma.

 

Dr. Harold Atkins

Multiple Myeloma

Dr. Atkins is a Clinical Scientist at the Ottawa Health Research Institute, with interests in regenerative medicine, multiple myeloma, multiple sclerosis and stem cell transplantation. He will discuss current therapeutic strategies in multiple myeloma care.

 

Dr. Carolyn Faught

“Diffuse Large B-cell lymphomas”

Dr. Faught is a Hematologist with a clinical focus in Lymphoma Care and Medical Education. She will discuss current therapeutic strategies in Diffuse Large B cell, Peripheral T-cell and Anaplastic NHLs.

 

Dr. Mitchell Sabloff

“Follicular/low grade lymphomas”

Dr. Sabloff is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa and Director of the Leukemia Program and is a member of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the Ottawa Hospital. His interests include the acute and chronic leukemias, myelodysplasia and follicular lymphoma. He will discuss current therapeutic strategies in follicular and other low grade lymphomas.

 

Dr. David Allan

“Hodgkin’s, Mantle Cell, Burkitt’s and Lymphoblastic lymphomas”

Dr. Allan is a Hematologist and Clinical Scientist at the Ottawa Health Research Institute. His clinical interests include stem cell transplantation and lymphoma. He will address current therapies of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Mantle Cell Lymphoma, Burkitt’s and Lymphoblastic Lymphomas and other NHL’s not covered by the other two concurrent sessions, as needed according to audience demand.

 

Sean Hopkins

“Complementary Therapies”

Mr. Hopkins is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Oncology at The Ottawa Hospital. He will outline the scope of complementary therapies and speak about their integration into standard care.

 

Dr. Richard Van der Jagt

“Clinical Trials: How they work and why they might benefit you”

Dr. Van der Jagt is a Hematologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and President, Canadian Leukemia Studies Group. He will discuss the role of clinical trials in cancer medicine, including the types of trials, how they are conducted, and how results are translated into clinical practice.

 

Izabela Uscinowicz

“Caring for Caregivers and Families”

Ms. Uscinowicz, MSW RSW, is a Social Worker with the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at The Ottawa Hospital. Recognizing the role patient's families and caregivers play in the provision of social support, her talk will focus on strengths and challenges related to interpersonal communication as patients learn to cope with their illness, while their families and/or caregivers learn to deal with their loved one being ill.
