Some chemotherapy and radiation therapy to your chest can cause scarring in the lungs, also referred to as lung fibrosis. Unfortunately, once scarring has already occurred, it is usually permanent. Your risk of developing lung issues will increase if you have a history of lung disease or are a smoker.
Discuss how to monitor your lung health with X-rays or scans with your doctor. Sometimes you may be able to spot mild issues even before more serious symptoms appear. As the scarring develops, you may experience shortness of breath, especially while exercising.
